Project management

Earned Value Management — APMG

Develop practical understanding of integrated performance measurement, forecasting and control.

Learning with a practical purpose.

Know whether a project is achieving enough for the money it spends. Earned Value Management develops your ability to connect scope, progress and cost, recognise unreliable reporting and explain the likely consequences for completion. You work with an original equipment-installation case containing incomplete progress evidence, delayed costs and competing recovery proposals. Teaching and course completion certification are provided through Kent Business College UK.

The online module consists of 14 weekly two-hour sessions: 28 live teaching hours across one semester, with spreadsheet practice between classes. The learning route supports professional development and preparation for the agreed APMG EVM certification level. KBC completion certification and APMG Foundation or Practitioner certification have separate assessment requirements; your enrolment offer identifies the route and any examination arrangements.

The outline below is a 14-session online module, with one two-hour live session each teaching week. Reading weeks, breaks and additional activities follow the agreed cohort calendar. The cohort syllabus, full route, dates, fees, independent study and assessment requirements are confirmed before enrolment.

Who this module is designed for.

Audience

  • Project controllers and cost engineers preparing performance reports.
  • Project managers challenging forecasts and recovery proposals.
  • PMO analysts and work-package owners responsible for progress evidence.

Starting knowledge and preparation

  • Be comfortable with percentages, simple formulas and spreadsheets.
  • Bring an understanding of project scope, schedules and budgets; no particular software licence is assumed.

What you will work towards.

  • Construct a small time-phased performance measurement baseline.
  • Select progress rules appropriate to the work being measured.
  • Calculate and interpret earned value measures with stated assumptions.
  • Explain forecast differences and recommend proportionate management action.

Explore the focus and practical output of each teaching session. Open individual sessions below, or expand the complete plan.

Session 01 Defining achievement

Separate money spent, effort used and demonstrable completion in the installation case.

Practical output: A clear definition of progress.

Session 02 Structuring scope

Organise deliverables and responsibilities so every reporting item has a recognisable owner.

Practical output: A work-package ownership structure.

Session 03 Time-phasing budgets

Distribute budget against planned work and inspect the relationship with scheduled milestones.

Practical output: A simple monthly baseline.

Session 04 Choosing measurement rules

Compare milestone weighting, completion rules and support activity across different types of work.

Practical output: A justified measurement rulebook.

Session 05 Collecting evidence

Assess photographs, acceptance records and supplier statements before accepting reported achievement.

Practical output: A progress evidence checklist.

Session 06 Reconciling actual costs

Investigate incomplete invoices and reporting cut-offs to create a consistent measurement period.

Practical output: A cost reconciliation worksheet.

Session 07 Calculating performance

Calculate planned value, earned value and actual cost for the same reporting date.

Practical output: A checked performance calculation.

Session 08 Explaining variances

Interpret cost and schedule indicators without treating a numerical signal as a complete diagnosis.

Practical output: A short variance commentary.

Session 09 Forecasting completion

Compare alternative estimates at completion and identify the assumptions behind each forecast.

Practical output: A forecast comparison table.

Session 10 Testing remaining work

Challenge whether future efficiency assumptions are credible given resource and supplier conditions.

Practical output: A remaining-work challenge log.

Session 11 Connecting risk

Explore how delivery uncertainty affects the forecast and how reserve decisions are governed.

Practical output: A risk-aware forecast explanation.

Session 12 Controlling baseline change

Evaluate a request to revise the baseline and retain visibility of past performance.

Practical output: A documented change recommendation.

Session 13 Reporting for action

Turn the analysis into a focused sponsor briefing with owners and decision deadlines.

Practical output: An actionable performance dashboard.

Session 14 Integrated review

Present the case, defend your calculations and identify improvements to the reporting process.

Practical output: A completed performance review pack.

Apply the learning

An installation project at the reporting date

Build a spreadsheet and management briefing from a supplied project dataset. Reconcile inconsistent source information, explain the chosen progress rules and compare forecast scenarios. Your recommendation should tell the sponsor what to investigate and which action would change the outlook.

Your project evidence can include

  • Baseline and measurement assumptions.
  • Checked calculations and forecast scenarios.
  • Executive briefing with corrective actions.

Use anonymised, public or suitable synthetic material where workplace information is confidential. The issued assessment brief confirms the required evidence.

Assessment, feedback and certification.

  • Worked calculation exercises with explanation of assumptions.
  • A final report assessed for consistency, interpretation and usefulness.
  • KBC completion is based on the agreed learning requirements; an APMG award requires its relevant external assessment.

Teaching and the relevant course certificate are provided through Kent Business College in the UK. A Kent Business College course certificate is distinct from a separate professional-body qualification or examination. Eligibility, the exact award and any examination inclusions are confirmed for the chosen route.

Questions worth asking.

Do I need advanced mathematics?

The module uses accessible arithmetic and spreadsheet calculations. Particular attention goes to choosing valid inputs and explaining what the results mean.

Will I learn a specific dashboard product?

Exercises focus on portable measurement and reporting skills. Any named software or supplied template is confirmed in your learning plan.

Which APMG examination should I take?

Discuss your experience and objectives with KBC. Your offer confirms the appropriate Foundation or Practitioner route, prerequisites and examination arrangements.
